v2.5 released

v2.5 adds SUA (Special Use Airspace) information, High Enroute IFR charts and some additional WAC charts to extend sectional coverage charts.

Reviews for the new region select has been less than satisfying.
Remember: Its trying to download a LOT so make sure you use your fastest connection possible. In most cases that should be wifi, but if you know your wifi broadband connection is slow, please try 3G as well and check which is faster.

It should take about 7 minutes to download 450Mb, and about 14 minutes for the 900Mb.

The first download bar is download, the second bar is unzip. If your wifi is faster to download than the unzip process the first bar should move faster than the second bar.

Don’t take the app offline until both bars are at 100%, but you can safely take the app into no connectivity areas after the first bar has completed.

  1. New pro is out. I just downloaded. It seems to have reverted back to the old chart download. It says to download the latest Skycharts and update to current charts?

Bt the way – the new regional downloads are WAY better in my opinion. Easy to do, easy to confirm. Easy to understand.

Getting the High charts is a big plus. Thanks for that.

  2. I concur: “the new regional downloads are WAY better in my opinion”
WiFi is the way to go. 3G if you’re stuck and really need the new charts…

  3. I have down loaded ver. 2.5, but when I try to update the new charts it says I have an obsolete version and will not let me continus!!!!
    What should I do?

    • It shouldn’t do that so I guess the server is not sure what version you are using ?
      Try this:
Reboot device (this will kill all apps), then restart the app.
If rebooting&restarting doesn’t help, try this:
Delete the app – see Q9 in the FAQ:
      http://forum.skycharts.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=188
Wait 15 minutes – then reboot, re-install and start app.

Please let me know how it goes.

  4. I was utterly dismayed to find the new “region download” in the new version. I bounce between different regions, and I often don’t have fast data connections available. It is not realistic to expect me to have to download nearly 900 Mb just to be able to use one chart in the Southwest. I can see from the simplicity the attraction of the region download for someone with a fast connection, who mostly stays in the same area. Something to think about in the future might be to give the user the option of setting which charts are downloaded per region initially.

Hopefully, you come up with something in the near future that allows better download flexibility. Unfortunately, this app is now completely useless for me, as it currently stands.

  5. I would like the new region select, except I don’t have enough space left to get the whole region. Since most of my flying is just in Florida, I’d be happy just getting the JAX and Miami sectionals.

For the next version, could there be some sort of button added to get a subsection of the region? Otherwise, I guess I’ll just have to wait until I upgrade my phone. :)

    • I’ll add your vote to the ‘we want more options when caching’ group.
It has been about 50/50 – people like the ease of selection (and nothing is forgotten when airborne), but I do agree it takes both time & space with very large regions.

If you have a lot of music and you’re using iTunes you can make a ‘smart playlist’ for your iPhone so you only get a couple of GB of music, and you regulate your disk usage that way.

      Example here.

At the end just set ‘Limit to XX GB’ and change the limit accordingly.

      • I was thinking more along the lines of a combination – having the current region select, but with an arrow on the right side of the screen (like the Favorites section under the phone). Selecting the region downloads the whole thing, but selecting the arrow lets you pick individual states, charts, or whatever. The best of both worlds.

        • Good idea. I’ll see what I can do. I’m not able to commit to any future changes though, I’m far to busy as is.
          Thanks for the suggestion!
